Banned Books Week is Sept 22-28. We’ll be counting down to the event by posting books that have been banned or challenged and the reasons behind it.
Today’s book is: Animal Farm by George Orwell.
Publication delayed until after WWII because publishers found it critical of the Soviet Union. Banned in the USSR for being anti-Communist. Banned in the USA for the communist text in its intro, even though the book was a satire on Stalinism. In 1963, the John Birch Society in Wisconsin challenged the use of the phrase “masses will revolt.”
